Tuition? Location? Mascot? Family influence? Programs offered?
What factor will determine the college you attend?
Choosing a college can be a simple, easy decision. Or it can be one of life’s most difficult choices. Even just deciding which schools to visit can be tricky.
Here are some suggestions for smoothing out the process of deciding which schools to tour.
- Make a list of the programs you’re interested in.
Before you book a flight to tour NYU or UCLA, jot down a list of the schools with the major and/or program you see yourself in. Don’t visit a school that doesn’t offer a path to your dream job.
- List the pros and cons.
Take stock of the pros and cons of going to each school for a four-year term (or possibly longer). Is it a pro that you will get to be in a new city and explore? Or is it a con that you will be away from your home and family? Weigh each pro and con as it applies to your personality, preferences, and situation.
- Talk over your choices.
Once you have your lists, talk about the schools you haven’t crossed off with your parents, teachers, and other people who are important to you.You may get several opinions—some you won’t want to hear! But take each word into consideration and sleep on it for a few nights. When you’ve finally got it narrowed down, start planning your visit!
Look into the schools, the programs they offer, and of course think about the cost of getting there. College advisors with each school can assist with any questions you might have. Ask how long a tour is, what it covers, and what resources are provided if a question on the tour isn’t answered. Also, sitting in on a class may give you just the spark of inspiration you need to decide one way or another if that school is right for you.
- Map it out.
Start with the colleges you are closest to. Visit farther away schools last. That way, you aren’t out major funds if you decided first that one of the closer schools is your destiny.
- Plan to miss school.
Talk with your teachers about absences due to college visits. Take assignments you might miss on the road with you so you don’t get behind.
